The Soil Series It is frequently possible to encounter, in a very limited area, almost the whole range of every soil property: from soil reaction values of pH 3.5 to pH 9.0, from structureless to very strongly structured, from sands to clays, from impermeable to excessively permeable materials etc. It has been one of the main objectives of the pedologist to classify this seemingly incomprehensible mass of data into some system so as to enable him to organise his thinking about soils.
